Description
- Purpose
- This project aims to develop and validate a heat-pulse groundwater flowmeter that canmeasure all three velocity components with hourly time resolution, enabling long-term deployments ingroundwater monitoring wells. The flowmeter will utilize a central heat emitter surrounded bythermistors to detect the rate and direction of heat transport by groundwater away from the boreholecenter. Analyzing the heat-pulse breakthrough curve at each thermistor will allow for quantifying themagnitude and 3D direction of groundwater flow.
- Activities
- The project will involve the development, fabrication, and performanceevaluation of the heat-pulse groundwater flowmeter in a laboratory setting with controlled variables. The main tasks include prototyping, laboratory testing, and subsequent field deployment for evaluationat the indiana and illinois next generation water observing system (ngwos) sites.deliverables and expected outcomes: the deliverables of this project will be a prototype of the heatpulsegroundwater flowmeter along with comprehensive documentation of its performance inlaboratory and field settings. The prototype is designed for long-term deployment, powered by solarenergy, and will interface with data acquisition platforms.intended beneficiary: this project will benefit monitoring agencies, research scientists, and water management organizations by providing improved tools for quantifying the exchange between ground and surface waters.
- Subrecipient activities
- This project builds upon the previous research on temperature as a tracer todetect groundwater flow conducted by PI tonina at the university of idaho center for ecohydraulicresearch (CER) and PI brock at rapid creek research (RCR). PI brock s expertise in the fabrication andapplication of the two-dimensional heat-pulse groundwater flowmeter is essential for the developmentof its 3D version. He will oversee the development and fabrication of the prototype and collaborate onthe evaluation of its performance.
