- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Nebraska Board of Regents received a $2.04 million Project Grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859), awarded August 8, 2025, with completion targeted for July 31, 2029. This award supports fundamental research investigating the ARP2/3 complex—a critical protein assembly system essential to cellular processes including cell migration, tissue...
- The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska $1,173,748 on July 10, 2026, under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to support Phase 3 of the Nebraska Center for Integrated Biomolecular Communication (NCIBC). NCIBC advances understanding of biomolecular communication pathways that regulate cellular functions and coordinate intercellular actions, with application to disease mechanisms and targeted...
- The Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska received a $649,999 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences on August 15, 2021 to support research titled "Nanoscale Structure and Dynamics of Nucleosome Arrays Assembled on DNA Templates with Physiologically Relevant Sequences." The award is part of the NSF's Biological Sciences program (CFDA #47.074), which aims to promote progress in the biological sciences and...
- The National Institute of General Medical Sciences, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded The Regents of the University of Colorado, University of Colorado Colorado Springs $325,938 on June 1, 2026, under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859). The Klocko Laboratory will conduct fundamental research on genome organization and function in fungi, specifically examining how eukaryotic genomes are precisely organized...
- The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded $433,233 to Northwestern University on September 1, 2026, under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to investigate regulated unproductive splicing in animal development. The research examines how genes couple alternative splicing with nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) to regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally. The project focuses on poison exons—exons that, when spliced into transcripts, introduce...
- The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), through its Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859), awarded a $355,584 Project Grant to the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) on August 18, 2023. This funding will support research to determine the biochemical basis and functional implications of the interaction between the proteins XRN2 and DDX23, and explore their cooperative role in regulating RNA-DNA hybrid structures...
- The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska, through its University of Nebraska Medical Center division, $415,113 under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) on September 1, 2026. The award funds development of nanofiber-based sutures and dressings to reduce surgical site infections, treat wound biofilms, and promote chronic wound healing. The research builds on prior findings demonstrating successful...
- The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $462,000 on August 1, 2026, under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to advance spatial imaging frameworks that reveal how non-coding RNAs organize within the nucleus across developmental and environmental contexts. The research establishes three interconnected themes. Theme 1 extends RNA MERFISH to profile small non-coding RNAs by incorporating enzymatic...
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska, through its University of Nebraska Medical Center division, $152,600 under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) on January 13, 2027, to fund a fellowship project examining the relationship between three-dimensional exon-exon DNA folding and RNA splicing. The research defines the mechanistic and temporal relationship between chromatin structure and co-transcriptional splicing through two integrated aims. In Aim 1, synchronized transcriptional activation in HCT116 cells will dissect the timing of exon-exon DNA folding, RNA polymerase progression, histone modifications, and spliceosome recruitment using high-resolution HI-C, CUT & RUN, CUT & TAG, and long-read nascent RNA sequencing. In Aim 2, the role of specific histone modifications in modulating internucleosomal interactions will be evaluated using reconstituted chromatin arrays, assessed via atomic force microscopy and in vitro micro-C. The fellowship provides training in genomics, chromatin biochemistry, and single-molecule AFM imaging, with applicant proficiency development in nanopore sequencing, bioinformatics, and chromatin nanoimaging conducted in the Rowley and Lyubchenko Laboratories. Performance occurs in Omaha, Nebraska. The project runs through July 31, 2029. This is a Project Grant, an assistance type within NIGMS's portfolio of investigator-initiated biomedical research funding.
