FENDER?S BLUE BUTTERFLY, A FEDERALLY LISTED THREATENED SPECIES AND AN OREGON CONSERVATION STRATEGY SPECIES, IS FOUND ONLY IN THE GRASSLANDS (AND OAK SAVANNAS) OF THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY OF OREGON. THE APPARENT POSITIVE RESPONSE OF THIS SPECIES TO HABITAT RESTORATION AND MANAGEMENT MAKES IT A HIGH PRIORITY FOR CONTINUED CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT. FENDER?S BLUE IS DEPENDENT ON NATIVE GRASSLAND HABITATS, AND ITS PREFERRED HOST PLANT, KINCAID?S LUPINE. ACCURATE INFORMATION ON THE STATUS OF LOCAL POPULATIONS IS ESSENTIAL TO TRACK AND EVALUATE THE SUCCESS OF RECOVERY EFFORTS FOR FENDER?S BLUE. THESE DATA AND THEIR COLLECTIVE ANALYSES ARE ESSENTIAL TO ENABLE THE US FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE TO RECOVER FENDER'S BLUE SO THE SPECIES MIGHT EVENTUALLY BE DELISTED. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO IMPLEMENT ANNUAL MONITORING OF FENDER?S BLUE BUTTERFLY POPULATIONS AND COORDINATE THE MONITORING EFFORTS OF MULTIPLE ENTITIES ACROSS THE ENTIRE RANGE OF FENDER'S BLUE. THIS WILL CONTRIBUTE DATA REQUIRED FOR THE USFWS RECOVERY ANALYSIS FOR FENDER?S BLUE AND SUPPORT ADAPTIVE MANAGEMENT OF CONSERVATION SITES.
