About this award

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Region 6, administering the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.615), awarded the State of Utah, Division of Wildlife Resources a $133,333.33 Project Grant effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. This award supports the conservation and recovery of June Suckers, a threatened species native to Utah Lake. The primary deliverables include the annual propagation and rearing of 20,000 to 25,000 June Suckers to a minimum size of 300 millimeters through managed hatchery operations, followed by stocking these fish into Utah Lake to augment the existing wild population. The project maintains a captive broodstock population as a safeguard against species extinction while developing and refining propagation procedures and augmentation strategies for long-term population recovery.

The award funds specific implementation actions including the continuation and refinement of captive management and breeding procedures for the broodstock population, development of sustainable production goals aligned with Utah Lake population augmentation objectives, and the annual stocking operations necessary to support population recovery efforts. By maintaining a hatchery-based June Sucker population, the Division of Wildlife Resources provides a secure source population for ongoing conservation activities while advancing the species' recovery under the Endangered Species Act framework.
