About this award
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) awarded a $1,000,000 Project Grant under the National Wildlife Refuge System Enhancements program (CFDA 15.654) to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for the Juneberry Project. This landscape-scale peatland restoration initiative in the Roseau River Wildlife Management Area in northwest Minnesota will restore hydrology to a large, degraded peatland and wetland complex by abandoning and filling up to 25 miles of lateral drainage ditches. The project aims to restore peatlands, multiple public water basins, and reduce flooding to agricultural lands and transportation infrastructure. The grant has a period of performance from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2029.
Description
The juneberry project is a landscape scale peatland restoration project in roseau river wildlife managementarea in northwest minnesota that will restore hydrology to a large, degraded peatland and wetland complex ditched in the early 20TH century. Two counties, 2 watershed districts, and the MN DNR share a common interest in this project, which will abandon and fill up to 25 miles of laterals of two state ditches, thereby restoring hydrology to the complex. This will in turn restore peatlands impacted by lateral effects, restore multiple public water basins, and additionally reduce the severity of flooding to agricultural lands and transportation infrastructure.
