About this award
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, under the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.615) program, has awarded a $1,311,000 Project Grant to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). This grant, effective August 15, 2024 and with a completion date of December 31, 2026, will support WDNR's acquisition of two land parcels to expand the Tiffany Wildlife Area in Buffalo County, Wisconsin.
The acquired parcels are high-quality habitat for the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake, a threatened species. This funding will enable WDNR to protect and enhance the existing rattlesnake habitat, as well as create connectivity between restored and managed habitats to address climate variability and hydrological fluctuations in the region. The grant aligns with the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund's objective of providing financial assistance to state governments for conservation activities targeting threatened, endangered, and at-risk species.
Description
These two acquisition parcels are high quality eastern massasauga rattlesnake (EMR) habitat and are contiguous with the core EMR population in the tiffany wildlife area. Acquisition of these two properties is needed to protect and enhance existing high quality EMR habitat and create a connectivity of restored and managed habitats to address climate variability and hydrological fluctuations at the site.
