About this award

This Project Grant award, valued at $650,579, is provided by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service under the Clean Vessel Act (CFDA 15.616) grant program. The funding will be used by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (Maine DEP) from July 1, 2024 through December 31, 2027 to improve the availability and reliability of boat pumpout stations along Maine's coast. Key activities include adding self-serve pumpout floats in remote anchorages, upgrading systems to accommodate larger vessels, continuing public education and outreach efforts, and supporting the maintenance and repair of existing pumpout stations. The intended beneficiaries are recreational boaters using Maine's coastal waterways. This grant continues an effective program that Maine DEP has managed since 1999 to reduce water pollution from boat-generated sewage and enhance recreational boating infrastructure.

Description

Since 1993, maine has worked toward increasing the availability and reliability of boat pumpout stations along the coast and increasing the publics awareness of the facilities through the clean vessel act funding. The grants were initially administered by the state planning office (SPO) but since 1999 have been managed through the maine department of environmental protection (medep). This grant proposal is for the calendar years 2024-2027 (v-18) and continues the effective program begun in 1999 by the medep. With this grant we hope to improve the ease of pumpout service to a variety of vessels by the addition of a number of self-serve pumpout floats in more remote anchorages, and systems to address the needs of larger vessels. Medep will continue to implement the education outreach (e o) plan and support the maintenance and repair of established pumpout stations through the operations and maintenance grants. Intended beneficiaries are the boating public using maine s coastal waterways.
