Description

This project proposal incorporates conservation management and recovery actions for twelve endangered species act ESA listed fish species in nevadadevils hole pupfish cyprinodon diabolis endangered moapa dace moapa coriacea endangered razorback sucker xyrauchen texanus endangered bonytail gila elegans endangered woundfin plagopterus argentissimus endangered virgin river chub gila seminuda endangered white river springfish crenichthys baileyi endangered hiko white river springfish crenichthys baileyi grandis endangered pahranagat roundtail chub gila robusta jordani endangered pahrump poolfish empetrichthys latos endangered big spring spinedace lepidomeda mollispinis pratensis threatened and white river spinedace lepidomeda albivallis endangered . These federally listed species all occur in geographic proximity in southern nevada within the lower colorado river basin and tributaries in disjunct portions of the white river and meadow valley wash drainage systems and adjacent areas of white pine county nevada except for devils hole pupfish which occurs within the amargosa river basin and certain refuge populations of the pahrump poolfish in clark county. This project also benefits more than 27 other native aquatic species of greatest conservation need sgcn that are identified in the nevada state wildlife action plan swap where they occur in the same or adjacent habitats within the geographic scope of this project. Current ongoing annual efforts involving species surveys status monitoring identification and implementation of actions to secure and enhance habitats and recovery implementation coordination between the nevada department of wildlife ndow the U.S. Fish and wildlife service FWS and other partners are essential to preclude species extinction and or loss of individual fish populations and maintain progress towards eventual recovery of these species. An understanding of species life history distribution population status and trend habitat conditions and species interactions is needed in order to assess risk and develop sound management conservation and recovery strategies for all native aquatic nongame species. Needs objectives approaches and expected results and benefits from the implementation of this proposed project are identified in detail within the project statement. Specific activities include species survey and monitoring coordination with FWS and other agencies and entities providing technical assistance implementing safe harbor agreements and conducting habitat restoration where appropriate. Expected results include the acquisition of updated population status information additional completed habitat restoration projects continued coordination development and implementation of multiparty conservation agreements a reduction in nonnative invasive species threats and continued coordinated execution of conservation and recovery strategies and actions and eventual delisting for these listed species.
