Description
The hawaii invertebrate program(HIP), which encompasses the snail extinction prevention program (sepp), facilitates research, conservation andapplied management of some the most rare, threatened and endangered native invertebrates across the state. Thehip and sepp programs collaborate with the university of hawaii at manoa (UHM), as well as other state, federaland private partners, to implement novel in-situ and EX-situ management approaches to stabilize and recoverdeclining species. The state of hawaii dlnr-dofaw captive rearing laboratories currently support over 45DIFFERENT invertebrate species from five different islands. These facilities provide a crucial genetic safety netfor the rare species they house, several of which are now extinct in the wild. Field staff conduct surveys, monitoring, translocations and reintroductions of target species. Construction and maintenance of predator prooffences, predator control, habitat enhancement and restoration are also integral to species recovery. Funds arerequested to continue support for HIP and sepp operations and staff on oahu and maui. A small amount of fundingwill also be directed to the hawaiian drosophila research stock center at UHM, which maintains stocks of rarepicture-wing drosophila species, many of which are also from populations no longer found in the wild. Fundingfrom the section 6 program is crucial to the continued operation of the HIP and sepp programs, and allows dlnrdofaw to pursue management of these imperiled species as new threats and challenges arise each year.
