Description

This has and will likely continue to result in increased negative interactions between bears and people. Although there are established tools in place to address and minimize unwanted human polar bear interactions on the north slope of alaska communities in the chukchi sea and bering strait region have few resources to address unwanted interactions. Without efforts to increase community capacity to respond to bears on shore there will likely be increased human and bear mortality in the future. Our work aims to implement a collaborative program between the alaska nannut CO management council the U.S. Fish and wildlife service world wildlife fund and the communities of gambell savoonga wales shishmaref and little diomede to provide tools and support for preventing and responding to unwanted human bear interactions.
