About this award

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $480,000 Project Grant under the National Fish Passage Program (CFDA 15.685) to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to improve a road stream crossing and provide reliable transportation to a community. The project aims to benefit the threatened Devils River Minnow by upgrading the 2804 Pinto Creek Crossing, which is located within 9 miles of critical habitat for this species. The existing crossing has a high gradient and inadequately sized culverts, causing significant damage to wildlife. Through this grant, TxDOT will undertake infrastructure improvements to mitigate the environmental impacts and ensure safe transportation access to the community. The project is scheduled for completion by September 30, 2027.

Description

The 2804 pinto creek crossing is in the middle of 9 miles of critical habitat for the threatened devils river minnow. The crossing has a high gradient without adequately sized culverts and a perched downstream side. Emergency repairs following a 2016 high water event led to infrastructure that is highly damaging to wildlife.
