About this award

The Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) of Maine has received a $2,000,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Interior Fish and Wildlife Service's National Fish Passage Program (CFDA 15.685) to construct a new state-of-the-art fish lift at the Woodland Hydroelectric Project. This project aims to significantly improve access to over 600 miles of historic sea-run fish habitat and 60,000 acres of alewife habitat by modernizing the outdated 1960s-era fish passage at this privately-owned, congressionally-authorized dam. The new fish lift is critical to realizing the river's production and ecosystem restoration potential, as the existing fish passageway is at risk of failure and inadequately designed. This high-priority project has support from federal, state, tribal, and other stakeholder groups, and the grant funding will be allocated to personnel, engineering support, and construction activities, with an expected completion date of December 31, 2026.

Description

The maine department of marine resources (mdmr) seeks to build a new state-of-the-art fishlift at thewoodland hydroelectric project (maine stream habitat viewer site ID D1876), significantly improving access to over 600 miles of historic sea-run fish habitat and over 60,000 acres of alewife habitat. Mdmr seeks to modernize fish passageat woodland DAM, a privately-owned, congressionally authorized project exempt from the federal power act. The existing 1960S ERA fishway at this site is at imminent risk of failure, is undersized, and poorly designed, limiting fish migrations and possibly precluding them if IT fails. A new modern fishway is required to realize theriver s production and ecosystem restoration potential. The rebound of sea-runfish resources in the ST. Croix river will contribute to the important nearshore ocean fisheries and coastaleconomies that are highly dependent on fishing. This is a high-priority project for US federal agencies, canadianagencies, two tribes, the state of maine, and numerous other interested groups.bipartisan infrastructure law- national fish passage project funding ( 2,000,000) will be parsed into the following categories- indirect 46,154, personnel fringe 43,956, personnel 109,890, engineering support 200,000 and construction 1,600,000.
