About this award
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) awarded a $326,874 National Fish Passage Program (CFDA 15.685) project grant to the City of Forest City, Iowa. The funding will be used to remove a 3-foot high low-head dam in Pammel Park along the Winnebago River and construct two rock cross vanes to facilitate fish passage. This project will reconnect 99 upstream miles of the river's mainstem into southern Minnesota, improving upstream passage for channel catfish, northern pike, yellow perch, and other fish species. The dam removal will also enhance distribution of several state-listed mussel species and improve safety for anglers, paddlers, and other river users, which is a priority for the Forest City community. The project is expected to be completed by September 30, 2025.
Description
Completion of the DAM removal and construction of two rock cross vanes to facilitate fish passage will reconnect 99 upstream miles of the mainstem into southern minnesota. Removal of the DAM is expected to improve upstream passage for channel catfish, northern pike, yellow perch, and other fish species, and increase the distribution of several state-listed mussel species of conservation need. The proposed action will also improve safety for anglers, paddlers and other river users, a priority for the community of forest city. Communities that will directly benefit from the project are forest city and leland to the north, and fertile mason city to the south. The removal of the 3-FT high DAM will improve natural flows and habitat conditions allowing fish to access the upper reaches of the river for spawning and rearing habitat, as well as open safe waterway access for recreational users.
