Description

These sites represent the entirety of the western management unit (designated by the united states fish and wildlife service) of the species (USFWS 2019). Recent efforts by the kentucky department of fish and wildlife resources (kdfwr) have resulted in the documentation of three new maternity sites for the species in kentucky. Further data collection and analysis by kdfwr has indicated that the species may be experiencing limited reproductive success. Additionally, band recovery data may indicate that the western management unit can be further delineated into two geographic areas with limited movement between these areas. Finally, microclimate data from within priority winter and summer sites is lacking. As current proposed down-listing criteria for the species includes protection of 5-8 major maternity and 4-8 hibernacula sites (depending on total population estimates for the management unit), survey efforts focused on detection of new roost sites are critical. Further, clarification of reproductive success and movement between focal winter and summer sites is necessary to adequately manage the species in kentucky.
