Description
The hawaii invertebrate program(HIP), which encompasses the snail extinction prevention program (sepp), facilitates research, conservation andapplied management of some the most rare, threatened and endangered native invertebrates across the state. Thehip and sepp programs collaborate with the university of hawaii at manoa (UHM), as well as other state, federaland private partners, to implement novel in-situ and EX-situ management approaches to stabilize and recoverdeclining species. The captive rearing laboratories currently support over 45 different invertebrate species fromfive different islands. These facilities provide a crucial genetic safety net for the rare species they house, several of which are now extinct in the wild. Field staff conduct surveys, monitoring, translocations andreintroductions of target species. Construction and maintenance of predator proof fences, predator control, habitat enhancement and restoration are also integral to species recovery. Funds are requested to continuesupport for HIP and sepp operations and staff on oahu and maui. A small amount of funding will also be directedto the hawaiian drosophila research stock center at UHM, which maintains stocks of rare picture-wing drosophilaspecies, many which are also from populations no longer found in the wild.
