About this award
The Northwest Straits Marine Conservation Foundation received a $152,500 Project Grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Region 1 under the National Fish Habitat Partnership (CFDA 15.686) program. The project will remove up to 1,200 linear feet of shore armor and pilings at the Clayton Beach site in Bow, WA to improve sediment transport processes and allow for the expansion of eelgrass beds and nearshore habitats. The project will also restore over 9 acres of beach and backshore habitat, including up to 4 acres of riparian habitat, through invasive species removal and enhancement of the marine riparian zone. These activities are intended to improve spawning habitat for surf smelt and Pacific sand lance, enhance public access to the beach, and provide interpretation of the site's cultural, historical, and ecosystem values. The project will be completed between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2028.

The project will remove up to 1,200LF of shore armor and pilings to improve sediment transport processes and allow for landward expansion of eelgrass beds and nearshore habitats to adapt to sea level rise. We will restore over 9 acres of beach and backshore habitat including up to 4 acres of riparian habitat through invasive species removal (scots broom, english IVY, japanese knotweed) and enhancement of the marine riparian zone. The project will improve spawning habitat for surf smelt and pacific sand lance, improve public access to clayton beach, and provide interpretation of cultural and historical uses and ecosystem dynamics.
