About this award

The U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 3 awarded a $266,908.06 Project Grant to Michigan State University under the National Fish Habitat Partnership (CFDA 15.686) program. This grant will enable the Midwest Glacial Lakes Partnership (MGLP) to build upon previous efforts to acquire and integrate spatial datasets depicting inland lakes and their ecologically and socioeconomically important characteristics. The project aims to acquire additional datasets, target datasets being developed by other researchers, incorporate data for lakes outside the partnership region, and contribute to an online mapping tool for stakeholders and the public. This work will support the MGLP's goals of protecting, rehabilitating, and enhancing sustainable fish habitats in the Midwest's glacial lakes. The project period runs from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2025.

Description

The midwest glacial lakes partnership (mglp) works to protect, rehabilitate, and enhance sustainable fish habitats in glacial lakes of the midwest for the use and enjoyment of current and future generations. Partnership staffing is limited to a part-time coordinator, but otherwise is dependent upon grants and voluntary participation to accomplish its goals. To implement the fish habitat assessment and conservation implementation goals of the partnership, IT needs to address basic database management needs. In phases 1 - 3 we began acquiring a spatial dataset that depicts inland lakes throughout the mglp region, and additionally acquired data describing ecologically and socioeconomically important characteristics for these lakes. This project will build upon those efforts by acquiring additional datasets that weren t available in earlier phases, identifying and targeting datasets currently being developed by other researchers, incorporating data for lakes outside of the partnership if they are located within a state where the mglp works, and finally, contributing to an effort to integrate the updated spatial framework and data into an on-line mapper to be used by stakeholders and the public throughout the region.
