Description
Recently, massive marine heatwaves in the north pacific were linked to seabird DIE offs of unprecedented scope. Ocean warming conditions are resulting in increased harmful algal bloom (HAB) events, with algal toxins detected in multiple species of the ocean food web, including marine mammals. As a unique, cold water research facility with decades of experience housing, rehabilitating, and researching north pacific marine mammals and seabirds, in this project the alaska sealife center (aslc) is proposing to conduct research to understand impacts of changing ocean conditions on marine species by conducting controlled experiments and developing indicators for monitoring ocean and animal health in seabirds and marine mammals. Additionally, aslc will develop capacities and cultivate partnerships for collaborations on surveillance and response to emerging threats relating to seabirds and marine mammals. The program serves as a foundational effort to synthesize current state of knowledge, generate new understanding about health indicators, and form partnerships to facilitate and strengthen marine animal health research and surveillance in alaska. The program aims to address needs and concerns of communities, resource managers, and other stakeholders of marine animal health.
