About this award
Oconto County will receive $376,000 from the Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 3 under the Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration program (CFDA 15.658) to restore wetlands and remove impediments benefiting fish species in Wisconsin's coastal wetlands and tributaries of Green Bay from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2027. The County will create, restore and connect wetlands to spawning routes for northern pike, remove fish impediments such as improperly placed culverts and dams restricting water flow, and continue pike research with state and university partners. The goal is to increase the northern pike population in Green Bay and its tributaries while removing barriers impacting all fish species.
Description
This project will take place in the coastal wetlands and tributaries of the BAY of green BAY on lake michigan. The goal of the restoration project is to increase the number of adult northern pike in the BAY and its tributaries while also removing impediments in these tributaries to benefit all fish species. This goal will be successfully achieved with three major potential actions 1) the creation, restoration and connection of wetlands to major pike spawning routes, 2) the removal of fish impediments such as rock dams, improperly placed culverts and farm crossings which restrict water flow, and 3) the continuation of pike research in conjunction with the wisconsin department of natural resources, university of wisconsin GB and shedd aquarium.
