Description

This project aims to increase our agency s ability to detect and respond to wildlife diseases by increasing our response capability, improving our capacity for surveillance and diagnostics, and adding dedicated resources dedicated to managing our data and communications needs. The florida fish and wildlife conservation commission s FWC fish and wildlife health FWH team is tasked with preventing, detecting, and managing diseases of wildlife, responding to stakeholder needs, and determining the extent of disease impacts and the risk posed to other species including domestic animals and people. With a small but dedicated staff, we respond to wildlife health need in a heavily populated yet ecosystem rich state that strectches over 800 miles from one end to the other. This project will allow US to hire two full-time staff for the next three years to organize and manage data and respond to disease events. By enacting a statewide WH plan, we will build and outfit disease response teams in 3 or more districts. We will also develop and distribute a list of 12 high-priority communications products and deliver a relational database capable of being queried for the very first time. The results are greater transparency and communication with our stakeholders, more in-depth outbreak investigations through increased surveillance and diagnostics, and improved ability to respond to emerging disease threats.
