Description

Bull trout recovery actions will soon begin in the north fork malheur recovery unit and fisheries managers are lacking a long term monitoring program that can track the status and trend of the bull trout populations and their habitat, provide an early warning system for introductions of non native brook trout, and detect a thermal habitat response to climate change and recovery actions local fisheries managers also have some questions about the actual number of local bull trout populations exist in this basin and the full distribution of spawning the proposed project is designed to collect data that would be the basis for a long term monitoring program and fill in information gaps about bull trout in this basin our four project objectives are to 1 determine distribution of spawning and early rearing for bull trout and brook trout and collect tissue samples for genetic analysis by conducting young of the year age 0 fish occupancy surveys throughout the basin 2 describe spawning and early rearing habitat and riparian conditions by conducting habitat surveys throughout the basin 3 bolster population monitoring by using genetic tools to determine population structure, calibrate census spawning surveys with estimates of effective number of breeders, and detect presence and location of brook trout or hybrids and 4 develop a stream temperature model for monitoring of basin wide thermal habitat
