The University of Central Florida Board of Trustees was awarded a $3,150,000 Project Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG Program) to develop wearable physiological monitoring devices for firefighters. The award period is from September 22, 2022 to September 21, 2025. Under the award, UCF will collaborate with Northwestern University and the University of Illinois to construct and test devices that measure firefighters' skin thermal properties, skin temperature, heart rate, and sweat volume and salt concentration during simulated firefighting activities. Prof. Rogers of Northwestern University will work with UCF to develop the monitoring devices using existing technologies and materials, while Dr. Masoud of the University of Illinois will validate the devices' performance in testing with UCF. Both sub-awardees will communicate results to UCF to meet the goals of integrating optimized wearable monitoring tools and correlating physiological responses with biological data to improve firefighter safety.
