The University of Wisconsin-Madison was awarded a $1,000,000 Project Grant under the Department of Energy's (DOE) Nuclear Energy Research, Development and Demonstration program (CFDA 81.121). The funding will support the University's research and development work in innovative nuclear technologies over a 3-year period from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2026.
As part of this award, the University of Wisconsin-Madison will collaborate with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a sub-awardee to develop solutions for studying flow boiling of water on silicon carbide surfaces, which can mimic the properties of nuclear fuel claddings. This sub-award to MIT totals an undisclosed amount. The overall project aims to advance nuclear energy science and technology in support of U.S. energy, environmental, and national security needs through research, development, and demonstration activities across areas such as reactor operations, advanced reactor designs, nuclear fuel cycles, and enabling technologies.
