The American Samoa Governor's Office was awarded a $389,025 project grant from the Department of the Interior's Insular Affairs office under the Economic, Social, and Political Development of the Territories program. The funding will support efforts to restore approximately 20.7 acres of degraded wetlands and 8.9 acres of mangrove rainforests in Leone Village, American Samoa that were damaged in the 2009 tsunami. Specifically, the Governor's Office will remove waste from the wetland areas, replant over 1,000 mangrove and riparian tree seedlings, and establish healthy wetland ecosystems to reduce sediment runoff into coral reefs. Additionally, the funding will enable distributing 20,000 agricultural crop seedlings, fruit trees, and native multi-purpose seedlings to schools and 54 local villages. These seedlings are salt resistant and can withstand natural disasters to boost food security and protect habitats. The work will be conducted in partnership with the American Samoa Department of Agriculture through September 2025.
