Description
- Abstract
- Prince george's community college: building maryland's nursing workforce will help meet the region's critical nursing workforce needs. The initiative includes $971,527.57 to expand and enhance the capacity of the nursing associate degree (RN) and certified nursing assistant (CNA) programs at prince george's community college (pgcc) in maryland. Pgcc's nursing and CNA programs are currently located on the main campus in largo, maryland, and services are also provided through a hybrid (online and face-to-face) model at the hyattsville and laurel college center campuses also. The requested funding will allow for the expansion of the nursing and CNA programs at the hyattsville and laurel campus locations, including the addition of a full CNA lab and the addition of new/updated nursing program labs and simulation equipment on the largo campus, expanding both nursing and CNA students' practical and clinical experience opportunities. Additionally, the proposed initiative includes the development and enhancement of a train-the-trainer model for nursing faculty and professional staff that will be initially facilitated through the purchase of new simulation equipment and continued by trained faculty and staff in subsequent years. Pgcc serves nearly 24,000 students a year through credit and noncredit programs in more than 200 academic and career training programs. The nursing program is currently offered at the largo campus, and the nursing student body, comprised of 93% minorities, reflects the county's demographic composition; 2018 US census estimates show that 73% of county residents are minorities, among which 64.4% are categorized as african american black (U.S. Census bureau, 2018). Pgcc's nursing programs are committed to educating and preparing graduates to become competent, culturally sensitive, and ethical professional nurses and nursing assistants who can practice in multiple healthcare settings and meet the healthcare need s of a growing culturally diverse population in prince george's county and throughout maryland. As with many other health concerns, covid-related hospitalizations and deaths have disproportionately affected the african american minority population. African americans have been two and a half times as likely as whites to be hospitalized, and they account for 34% of deaths although representing 12% of the total U.S. Population (CDC 2020, holmes ET AL 2020). At many times throughout the last two years, prince george's county has reported the highest number of covid cases in the region (maryland department of health 2022). Covid, along with many other factors have exacerbated an already significant problem, a shortage of healthcare workers to meet the needs of the county's population, especially the medicaid eligible and other low-income population groups. The health resources and services administration designates counties as health professional shortage areas (hrsas) based on criteria such as their population-to-provider ratio. In 2021 and thus far in 2022, prince george's county has a total of seven health professional shortage areas (hrsas) in the primary care discipline – geographic hpsa (3), population group hpsa (3), and federally qualified health center hpsa (1). In maryland, only two other areas, baltimore city and montgomery county have more designated hrsas than prince george's county (data.hrsa.GOV, 4/3/22). IT is of critical importance to this area that more is done to increase the number of those preparing for and entering nursing and other healthcare-related professions. A call has been issued for the nursing profession to increase equity, decrease disparities, and provide nurses with necessary skills to overcome future challenges. A diverse nursing workforce is essential to these goals (national academies of sciences, engineering, and medicine, 2021). This call for action resonates very clearly in a majority minority community college such a s pgcc, and the proposed initiative.
