About this award

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) awarded Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) a $3.0 million Project Grant under the Railroad Crossing Elimination (RCE) Program (CFDA 20.327) on May 1, 2025, with a completion date of July 31, 2028. The primary deliverable is a comprehensive preliminary design for the Danbury Branch Grade Crossing Engagement, Planning, and Consolidation Program, which will target safety enhancements at four grade crossings along Metro-North Railroad's Danbury Branch in Fairfield County: Commerce Street, Devine Brothers, Taylor Street, and Triangle Street.

The project will consolidate redundant grade crossings and implement associated safety improvements designed to eliminate collision risks at Commerce Street and Taylor Street while significantly reducing collision risks at Devine Brothers and Triangle Street. These planning, environmental review, and design activities will serve as the foundation for subsequent grade crossing separation, closure, or safety device improvements intended to enhance transportation safety for thousands of railroad commuters and vehicular traffic in the region.

Description

The objective of this project is to significantly enhance safety for thousands of railroad commuters and drivers by developing a comprehensive preliminary design for the danbury branch grade crossing engagement, planning, and consolidation program. This program targets the consolidation of the commerce street and devine brothers grade crossings, as well as the taylor street and triangle street grade crossings, along with implementing associated safety improvements on metro-north railroads danbury branch in fairfield county. The consolidation and safety enhancements at the commerce street devine brothers corridor aim to eliminate collision risks at commerce street and drastically reduce collision possibilities at these two crossings. Similarly, the improvements at the taylor street triangle street corridor will eliminate collision risks at taylor street and significantly reduce them at triangle street.
