The Federal Railroad Administration awarded a $223,044,167 Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program grant to the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) for the Gulf Coast Corridor Improvement Project. This project will support the restoration of intercity passenger rail service in the Gulf Coast region by funding infrastructure upgrades such as lengthening sidings, installing new switches and turnouts, constructing additional crossovers, and improving stations, yards, and grade crossings along the rail corridor from New Orleans to the Port of Mobile. The project is a collaborative effort between Amtrak, the Southern Rail Commission, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway, the Alabama State Port Authority, and the states of Mississippi and Louisiana. The grant will fund project development activities including preliminary engineering, environmental reviews, final design, and construction, with a targeted completion date of January 31, 2032.
