The $196,639 award to the University of Maryland, College Park will fund the compilation of a detailed dataset documenting the impacts of the Maui wildfire, as well as an assessment of using advanced computational fluid dynamics...
This federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Measurement and Engineering Research and Standards (CFDA 11.609) program provides $453,120 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to develop and implement a standardized tiered fire shelter system for Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) communities. The research aims to create a tiered system of fire shelters with integrated evacuation and shelter-in-place strategies, incorporating hazard...
Oregon State University was awarded a $250,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to conduct collaborative research from August 1, 2023 to July 31, 2026. The research aims to improve community wildfire resilience by integrating behavioral science with evacuation modeling. Specifically, the university will study household responses to wildfire risk across four wildland-urban interface...
This Project Grant award of $317,959, provided by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050), aims to gain predictive understanding of the physical processes underlying rapid wildfire spread and associated smoke transport. The research will consolidate common characteristics between naturally occurring density currents and fire-generated warm plumes to apply the physical understanding of observed large-scale turbulent flows to the rapid growth of billows in fire smoke...
This three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation supports research into wildland fire observation, management, and evacuation systems. With $144,967 in funding, the award will develop intelligent collaborative flying and ground systems to aid in monitoring, responding to, and evacuating areas threatened by wildfires. The awardee is the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, operating through its National Center for Atmospheric Research facility in Boulder, Colorado....
This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will establish a framework to link wildfire behavior at global and local scales. The $999,457 award to Vanderbilt University aims to improve models of fire risk in fire-prone communities by considering houses as drivers of fire, rather than just recipients. The project will develop a new community wildfire propagation model, AGNI-NAR, to capture fire interaction between vegetation and structures....
This three-year, $507,943 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program will fund research at Arizona State University to develop new data-driven risk prediction and management tools for fire departments. The research has several goals: conducting empirical study of community-oriented risk work and associated data use by fire personnel; developing a human-centered design process for future tools; co-designing speculative...
This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) supports rapid response research to analyze the impacts of the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires on infrastructure resilience in dense wildland-urban interface (WUI) communities. The $199,445 award to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) will fund data collection and analysis to (a) assess structure-to-structure fire spread patterns and key resilience factors, (b) evaluate...

PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS GRANT IS TO DEVELOP A DIGITAL COLLABORATIVE EVACUATION DECISION-MAKING TOOL TO ASSIST WILDLAND-URBAN INTERFACE FIRE STAKEHOLDERS IN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND RESPONSE.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES WILL BE PERFORMED. FIRST AN ANALYSIS OF STAKEHOLDER NEEDS WILL BE CONDUCTED THROUGH FACT-FINDING AND INTERVIEWS WITH STAKEHOLDERS INCLUDING EXPERT INPUT. TWO WORKSHOPS WILL BE HELD WITH SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS AND STAKEHOLDERS TO VALIDATE FACT-FINDINGS AND IDENTIFY DESIGN VARIATIONS. TARGET END USERS WILL BE ASKED FOR THEIR VIEWS ON VARIOUS DESIGN VARIATIONS. THE RESULTS WILL BE CAPTURED AND FORM THE BASIS FOR THE WUI-SHOW VISUALIZER INTERFACE AND THE OUTPUT IT PRODUCES. SPECIFICATIONS WILL BE PRODUCED ON THE VR CAPABILITY REQUIRED TO MEET STAKEHOLDER NEEDS. THE VR-BASED RENDERER FOR THE WUI-NITY PLATFORM SCENARIO DATA INCLUDING DEVELOPMENT OF ROUTINES FOR SCENARIO DATA VISUALIZATION, DYNAMIC INFORMATION DISPLAY, AND INTERACTIVITY WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN A MULTI-TOUCH TABLE PROTOTYPE AND TESTED.EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE EXPECTED OUTCOME IS AN INTERACTIVE VR RENDER TOOL THAT WILL ALLOW THE RESULTS OF THE WUI-NITY PLATFORM FOR DECISION-MAKING DURING EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OR EVACUATION MODELING TO BE INTERACTIVELY PRESENTED. THE SO-CALLED WUI-SHOW WILL BE THE FIRST PROJECT TO PROVIDE THE SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE ABLE TO DISPLAY A SCIENTIFICALLY BASED REPRESENTATION OF WILDLAND-URBAN INTERFACE FIRE EVACUATION. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THIS PROJECT WILL ALLOW IMPROVED EVACUATION PLANNING AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE BY PROVIDING ACCESSIBLE INFORMATION ON WILDFIRE EVACUATION TO STAKEHOLDERS. IN ADDITION, THE PROJECT CAN HAVE A LONG-TERM POSITIVE IMPACT IN REDUCING HUMAN LOSSES BY FACILITATING EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION AND TRAINING IN CASE OF WILDFIRES.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: EMERGENCY MANAGERS AND OTHER COMMUNITY PLANNING PERSONNEL WOULD BENEFIT FROM THE POWERFUL TOOLS TO PLAN AND VISUALIZE MORE ROBUST EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS AND WILDFIRE RESPONSE. THE PUBLIC AT LARGE WILL BENEFIT FROM IMPROVED EMERGENCY EVACUATION AND SHELTER OPTIONS DURING WILDFIRE EVENTS.SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES: THE FIRE PROTECTION RESEARCH FOUNDATION IS THE LEAD AND RESPONSIBLE FOR PROJECT MANAGEMENT, THE PROJECT ADVISORY PANEL AND DISSEMINATION AND EXPLOITATION OF THE PROJECT RESULTS. SUBRECIPIENTS WILL PARTICIPATE ALL ADDITIONAL WORK ACTIVITIES COLLABORATIVELY INCLUDING: ANALYSIS OF STAKEHOLDER NEEDS, MODEL INTEGRATION, WUI-SHOW SCENARIO VISUALIZATION, WUI-SHOW RESULTS VISUALIZATION, AND THE WUI-SHOW MULTI-TOUCH TABLE. THE SUBAWARDEES ARE LUND UNIVERSITY, SWEDEN; MOVEMENT STRATEGIES, UK; NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL CANADA; IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON, UK; RMIT UNIVERSITY, AU.
