Description

Purpose
The purpose of this project is to develop techniques for the ultraclean transfer of low defect graphene, ILL regard of growth substrate. The transfer will leverage ultrasonic energy and an intermediate nafion polymer. The ability to place graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms in specific locations on FAB-friendly substrates is critical as a component in future electronic and information technologies.
Activities
The technical approach will consist of 3 tasks, namely initial FEA modeling, characterization of adhesion energies at relevant interfaces, followed by proof-of-concept experiments (i.e., validation of the technology on substrate sizes of 1? X 1?). Furthermore, a follow-up plan to scale up the technology has been developed. The transferred graphene films will be characterized using advanced measurement capabilities.
Expected outcomes
The results of the proposed work will be detailed processes that will be published in technical, peer-reviewed journals and presented at conferences. Characterization data will also be generated and included in the dissemination of the results.
Intended beneficiaries
The research community involved in the study of 2D materials would have immediate benefit from the developed processes to transfer graphene. Such ability will enable new structures to be formed and tested more quickly ensuring US leadership in next generation electronics.
Subrecipient activities
The recipient does not intend to subaward funds.
