Description

Abstract
This finders foundry award creates a new learning tool that helps young students understand how AI can support real design and engineering work. Today, most classrooms do not have experts who know how to use AI in advanced manufacturing, which makes IT hard for students to see how these tools are used in real jobs. This project plans to fix that by building an AI coach that works together with a classroom teacher. The AI coach will show students how experts think, such as how to read data from a drop test and decide what to change in a design. The teacher will help guide safe, fair, and responsible use of AI. The project will test this idea with 3RD and 5TH grade students in columbus, ohio. By the end of the planning phase, the team will create an early design of the tool, a research plan, and a roadmap for future development. This finders foundry award CO-designs an AI coach plus educator model that embeds an AI expert in the loop alongside a skilled generalist educator who serves as the human in the loop, with elementary learners at the center. The effort is grounded in cognitive apprenticeship enacted through a collaborative leadership team to include modeling, coaching, scaffolding, articulation, reflection, and exploration. This approach makes expert cognition transparent and learnable, aligning iterative design decisions with measurable learning outcomes which is initially tailored to afterschool informal learning with 3RD and 5TH grade cohorts, anchored to AI expertise and real advanced manufacturing pathways in a local community. The CO-designed research work includes a wireframe of the learning tool, refined research questions linking pedagogical moves to dual outcomes such as growth in critical thinking and emergent ?responsible human in the loop? Identity, and a logic model to guide future CO-design and iteration. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.- subawards are planned for this award.
