- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $199,994 Project Grant through the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program to The Leland Stanford Junior University to explore how high school youth, particularly those from historically marginalized communities, interact with and learn about generative AI and machine learning tools. Over a one-year period, the researchers will pilot classroom and extracurricular activities, collect quantitative and qualitative data, and analyze findings to develop...
- This $400,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) aims to redesign an introductory computer science (CS1) course to teach programming with the aid of large language model (LLM) AI assistants. The key goals are to: 1) Redesign the CS1 course to emphasize skills like code reading, testing, and problem decomposition rather than just syntax and writing code from scratch; 2) Study how...
- This is a $200,000 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program. The grant will fund a collaborative research project titled "The AI Voyage: Integrating AI Literacy into Computer Science Curricula with Accessible Hands-On Learning Activities" at Georgia State University Research Foundation Inc. The project aims to develop a series of accessible, hands-on learning activities featuring artificial intelligence (AI) to be...
- The National Science Foundation's Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded $114,371 to The Research Foundation For The State University Of New York on September 15, 2025, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop artificial intelligence (AI) literacy resources and professional learning support for middle school educators. Over the two-year project period through August 31, 2027, university researchers will collaborate with school districts in Texas...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (formerly Education and Human Resources) program (CFDA 47.076) provides $156,000 to Northwestern University to rapidly develop and research a set of "unplugged" hands-on learning activities for teaching middle-school students about artificial intelligence (AI). The project aims to create an open-source repository of up to 15 hands-on, low-cost AI literacy activities that can be led by educators...
- This $199,503 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program will fund a large-scale, mixed-methods study to understand perceptions and use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in K-12 education. The one-year project will survey a nationally representative sample of parents, teachers, and youth to identify opportunities, risks, and supports needed for integrating AI-driven learning tools. The study will employ both...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program grant award (CFDA 47.070) of $224,669 to North Carolina State University supports the development and evaluation of novel AI-based methods for student modeling to trace students' competencies in computer science education. The project aims to tailor large language models (LLMs) to generate personalized learning scaffolds - such as feedback, worked examples, and suggested next problems - that...
NSF FF: PLANNING: CO-DESIGNING A SCALABLE HOSTED LEARNING PLATFORM FOR SECONDARY AI AND COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION -THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD ENHANCES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' ACCESS TO AI AND COMPUTER SCIENCE LEARNING DESPITE TECHNOLOGICAL BARRIERS. WHILE MANY SCHOOLS STRUGGLE WITH LIMITED STAFF, UNSTABLE COMPUTING ENVIRONMENTS, AND STRICT IT RULES THAT MAKE CODING LESSONS HARD TO RUN, THIS PROJECT DESIGNS A HOSTED LEARNING PLATFORM THAT GIVES STUDENTS A STABLE, EASY?TO?USE CODING SPACE AND GIVES TEACHERS TOOLS THAT SIMPLIFY INSTRUCTION. STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND SCHOOL LEADERS COLLABORATE TO ESTABLISH RESEARCH-BASED REQUIREMENTS TO ENSURE A SECURE, ACCESSIBLE, AND PRACTICE PLATFORM SCALABLE TO ALL LEARNING SPACES. THE ENVIRONMENT WILL SUPPORT AI AND CS LESSONS WITHOUT NEEDING SPECIAL EQUIPMENT OR ONGOING TECHNICAL HELP. BY MAKING THE TECHNOLOGY MORE RELIABLE, THE PROJECT OFFERS LEARNING SPACES THE OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD CONSISTENT OFFERINGS AND PROVIDES MORE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE AI AND COMPUTER SCIENCE EACH DAY. THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD COLLABORATIVELY ASSESSES THE FEASIBILITY OF A CLOUD?HOSTED WORKSPACE ENVIRONMENT FEATURING PERSISTENT STUDENT CONTAINERS, INTEGRATED CURRICULUM TOOLS, AND A TEACHER DASHBOARD TO SUPPORT SCALABLE AI/CS LEARNING. THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONCEPT?LEVEL PLATFORM MAPS, CURRICULUM?INTEGRATION PATHWAYS, AND WIREFRAMES FOR BOTH STUDENT AND TEACHER INTERFACES ARE GUIDED BY STAKEHOLDER COLLABORATION. TARGETED USABILITY TESTING INCLUDING REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS WILL ESTABLISH FUNCTIONAL AND INSTRUCTIONAL NEEDS ACROSS A WIDE RANGE OF EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS. ANTICIPATED OUTPUTS INCLUDE AN ADOPTION?FEASIBILITY MEMO, A PILOT PLAN OUTLINING IMPLEMENTATION CONSTRAINTS, AND A ROADMAP GUIDING PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT. THE WORK ESTABLISHES KEY TECHNICAL AND PEDAGOGICAL CONDITIONS REQUIRED FOR A PERSISTENT, CLOUD?BASED ENVIRONMENT THAT SUPPORTS EQUITABLE AND SCALABLE AI/CS INSTRUCTION. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
