The one-year project will investigate using blocks-based programming with everyday information to teach secondary school students data science skills. A data-focused visual block-based programming toolkit will be created for students to manipulate...
- This $348,706 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) aims to develop and implement a curricular program for middle-school students in community-based settings. The program will focus on building data visualization skills to help students become critical consumers and interpreters of data. The research goals are to provide empirical evidence of middle school students building data visualization practices through learning technologies and to...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant, awarded under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), provides $449,768 to the Concord Consortium, a non-profit research and development organization, to develop a digital learning tool that allows middle school students to visually and dynamically explore neural pathways in language-based AI systems. The project aims to enhance students' understanding of neural network interpretability and human-machine collaboration in AI development. Key...
- Federal Grant Award Summary WestEd has been awarded $1,463,000 through a Project Grant under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), administered by the National Science Foundation's Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings. The award, effective September 1, 2025, with completion targeted for August 31, 2028, funds the development and refinement of "Data Adventures"—a series of open-access, modular instructional units designed to introduce middle school...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program, funded under the Comprehensive Federal Assistance Directory Number 47.084, provides $256,000 to Brio Data Group LLC of Norman, Oklahoma. The award period is from June 1, 2022 through February 28, 2023. Under this award, Brio Data Group will develop methods for analyzing learner narratives through machine learning and natural language processing techniques. By digitally mining written...
- This $199,503 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program will fund a large-scale, mixed-methods study to understand perceptions and use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in K-12 education. The one-year project will survey a nationally representative sample of parents, teachers, and youth to identify opportunities, risks, and supports needed for integrating AI-driven learning tools. The study will employ both...
- This Project Grant award, provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program, aims to investigate essential competencies for data science literacy and how undergraduate students learn these fundamentals in introductory data science courses. The $331,452 award, effective October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2027, will be led by Arizona State University (ASU) to serve the national interest by identifying priority data science competencies and...
- This Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings supports the development of a network of "tutor observatories" to capture and analyze data on teacher-student interactions in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. The project, titled "Capturing and Leveraging Data from Teacher-Student Interactions to Improve STEM Learning: An Incubator Project," aims to create a...
NSF FF: PLANNING: A DATA EXPLORATION AND STORYTELLING TOOL FOR SCIENCE CLASSROOMS -THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD SUPPORTS THE CREATION OF A TOOL FOR STUDENTS TO INTERACTIVELY EXPLORE MULTIVARIATE, MESSY SCIENTIFIC DATA AND CONSTRUCT DATA STORIES. MANY STUDENTS STRUGGLE TO READ GRAPHS, EXPLORE PATTERNS, OR QUESTION RESULTS WHEN WORKING WITH REAL DATASETS. THE TOOL WILL GUIDE STUDENTS AS THEY LOOK FOR TRENDS, ASK BETTER QUESTIONS, AND REVISE THEIR THINKING. AI PROMPTS WILL ENCOURAGE REFLECTION, HELPING STUDENTS BUILD STRONGER REASONING SKILLS. AN INTERDISCIPLINARY LEADERSHIP TEAM INCLUDING TEACHERS AND CAREGIVERS WILL HELP SHAPE THE TOOL SO IT FITS CLASSROOM NEEDS AND SUPPORTS DEEPER LEARNING. BY GIVING STUDENTS A SAFE AND SIMPLE WAY TO EXPLORE DATA, THE PROJECT AIMS TO BUILD CONFIDENCE AND PREPARE STUDENTS FOR FUTURE STEM WORK WHERE DATA SKILLS ARE ESSENTIAL. THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD INCREASES STUDENT UNDERSTANDING OF REAL LIFE STEM DATA SETS THROUGH A PROTOTYPE FOR AN INTERACTIVE DATA?REASONING ENVIRONMENT. IT INCORPORATE AI?GENERATED REFLECTIVE PROMPTS TO GUIDE STUDENTS TO RECONSIDER AND REFINE THEIR OWN THINKING AND FINGER-GESTURE INTERFACE (E.G. DRAGGING, PINCHING DATA ON THE SCREEN) TO MAKE ABSTRACT DATA REASONING VISIBLE AND TANGIBLE. THE PROJECT WILL GATHER STAKEHOLDER INSIGHTS, CONDUCT CO?DESIGN ACTIVITIES TO DEFINE INTERFACE ELEMENTS, AND PILOT PROTOTYPE COMPONENTS IN HIGH?SCHOOL CLASSROOMS. TECHNICAL WORK WILL FOCUS ON ALIGNING SCAFFOLD SEQUENCES WITH A VALIDATED LEARNING PROGRESSION FOR DATA REASONING, ASSESSING USABILITY, AND TESTING FEASIBILITY OF KEY INTERACTIVE AND AI?DRIVEN FEATURES. THE PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE DESIGN KNOWLEDGE FOR EMBODIED, AI?SUPPORTED DATA REASONING ENVIRONMENTS THAT CULTIVATE DEEPER STUDENT ENGAGEMENT WITH ANALYTICAL PRACTICES. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
