The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded the University of Pennsylvania $223,210 on July 1, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop and research language-based artificial intelligence curriculum modules for high school students. The project will develop a two-hour introductory AI module and three five-hour modules integrating AI concepts into mathematics, English language arts, and history instruction. The team will also create a 60-hour professional development program for teachers to implement the modules in a coordinated fashion across disciplines. During the project period, 12 teachers and 900 students will directly participate. The work targets underrepresented and underserved populations in AI, specifically African Americans, Latinx students, and females. An interdisciplinary team led by the Concord Consortium, Carnegie Mellon University, and North Carolina State University will collaborate with the San Joaquin County Office of Education in California and two school districts to deliver the program. Performance occurs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with a period of performance ending May 31, 2028. The assistance type is a Project Grant.
