The project investigates how elementary students develop self-regulated learning skills through interaction...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded the University of Miami $860,128 on January 15, 2026, to develop and study the LogicDataScience (LogicDS) curriculum, a virtual data science course for rural high school students delivered through Florida Virtual Schools. The curriculum integrates the foundations of data science in computing, mathematics, and statistics through mathematical logic, addressing the educational barrier that rural...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded the University of Texas at Austin $401,510 on September 1, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to investigate how youth participatory mapping and community design research can strengthen mathematics interventions for elementary students. The project examines how learning environments across classrooms, intervention programs, homes, and community spaces shape access to...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded $301,008 to The University of Kentucky Research Foundation on October 1, 2025, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to investigate the integration of computational thinking into elementary school curricula and develop professional development models for teachers. The project delivers multi-year professional development and mentorship to elementary teachers, supporting them in...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded the University of Massachusetts $628,360 on August 1, 2026, to develop simulated student agents—AI-based systems designed to model how students think, learn, and respond during educational activities. The award funds research under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076). The research team will develop fully interactive student models capable of engaging in dialogues with teachers and...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences awarded the University of Miami $499,988 on July 1, 2026, under the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences program (CFDA 47.075) to create research-ready datasets from millions of student-AI interactions collected through a digital learning platform used by over 60,000 middle school students nationwide. The project will assemble and document large-scale, multimodal datasets capturing over 3 million student-AI...
- This $667,156 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings will fund the development of a Data Sensing Learning Environment (DASLET) to advance middle school students' computational thinking skills and engagement with STEM careers in the construction industry. Under the NSF's STEM Education program (CFDA #47.076), which supports the development of the Nation's STEM education enterprise, Texas A&M University will...
- The University of Miami was awarded a $299,638 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education under the federal STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) on December 15, 2021. The grant will support the development of a three-dimensional immersive learning environment to improve student learning of foundational engineering concepts through November 30, 2024. As the prime awardee, the University of Miami will leverage virtual and augmented reality technologies...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded Worcester Polytechnic Institute $265,797 on August 1, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop simulated student agents powered by large language models. The project creates AI-based systems designed to model how students think, learn, and respond during educational activities, focusing on middle-school mathematics. The research team will develop fully interactive...
The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded the University of Miami $144,815 on January 15, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to design and research spatial computational thinking skills development for upper-elementary Latinx students through an immersive virtual learning environment. The project will design culturally relevant and active learning experiences using Minecraft: Education Edition, creating a unique set of bilingual, extended, and age-appropriate visual programming functions to enable thousands of upper-elementary students to engage in spatial programming. Participants will develop spatial computational thinking skills—including abstraction of spatial features, decomposition and geometric representation of shapes, pattern recognition, and application of programming tools for spatial algorithm design. The project will introduce students to computationally-intensive STEM careers in robotics, virtual reality, and smart geospatial systems. Learning activities will be accessible in school or at home and designed as low-cost, self-paced experiences flexible and affordable for families and educators with varying needs. Through design-based research, the project will address how immersive virtual learning environments can support upper-elementary students' spatial computational thinking development and career awareness. Work is performed in South Miami, Florida, with period of performance from January 15, 2026, through May 31, 2027.
