The project reconstructs the tectonic and hydrologic evolution of Clayton Valley, Nevada—home to the only currently producing lithium brine operation in North America—to quantify how...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) provides $650,214 to the University of Nevada, Reno to study lithium enrichment in volcanic caldera systems. Principal investigators Drs. Harlaux and Ruprecht will analyze melt and fluid inclusions in volcanic rocks from the McDermitt Caldera using electron microprobe, LA-ICP-MS, and SIMS to determine how lithium progressively enriched in magmas and was partitioned into volatile phases during magma...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded Brown University $407,967 on October 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to investigate rubidium co-accumulation and resource characterization in lithium-rich brines across the western United States and the Lithium Triangle of South America through postdoctoral fellowship research. The project will quantify rubidium concentrations, resources, and isotopic variations in closed-basin lithium brine systems...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems awarded a $175,000 Project Grant to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York to support research under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). The project aims to advance a sustainable chemistry-based approach for extracting lithium ions from hypersaline aqueous brines, which have lower lithium-ion concentrations compared to other alkali metal cations. The...
- The Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded the Desert Research Institute $2.04 million on August 21, 2026, under the Conservation Research and Development program (CFDA 81.086) to research lithium resources and expand knowledge of lithium brines in Nevada through August 20, 2028. The award funds research to determine the recoverability of lithium from brines, identify the intersection of sensitive ecosystems with lithium deposits, and improve...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Directorate (CFDA 47.041) Project Grant award of $231,810 to the University of Louisville provides funding for a collaborative research project on the selective extraction of lithium from seawater. The principal investigators, Professors Xiaowei Teng and Badri Narayanan, aim to develop new classes of manganese oxide layered materials for electrochemical lithium extraction from seawater. The project will integrate materials synthesis,...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Materials Research awarded Brown University $224,741 on October 1, 2025, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to conduct collaborative research on the mechanistic understanding of chemomechanics in phase-changing electroceramics for sodium-ion batteries. The research integrates novel experiments, data analysis, and modeling approaches to understand battery degradation mechanisms in sodium-ion systems. The project pursues a...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded Brown University $300,000 on January 1, 2027, through the Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) to support an EPSCOR Research Fellows project on monochromated scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) characterization of intercalated two-dimensional materials bilayers. The fellowship supports an assistant professor at Brown University and provides graduate student...
The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded Brown University $225,013 on September 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to study tectonic controls on lithium delivery and enrichment in Nevada's Basin and Range, with performance extending through August 31, 2029. Brown will reconstruct the tectonic and hydrologic evolution of Clayton Valley, Nevada—site of the only currently producing lithium brine operation in North America—to quantify how deformation controls lithium enrichment and to develop a process-based geochemical model linking fault evolution, basin development, and fluid flow to lithium distribution. The research will use complementary methods to constrain the timing of extension, volcanism, basin sedimentation, and fault activity, and will assess how faults and basin architecture influence fluid migration and lithium enrichment. The project will also partner with industry to develop the Western U.S. Critical Minerals Field School, providing students with field and laboratory skills with emphasis on lithium systems. Work is performed in Providence, Rhode Island, with field research conducted in Clayton Valley, Nevada.
