The project reconstructs the tectonic and hydrologic evolution of Clayton Valley, Nevada—home to the only currently producing lithium brine operation in North America—to quantify how...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) provides $650,214 to the University of Nevada, Reno to study lithium enrichment in volcanic caldera systems. Principal investigators Drs. Harlaux and Ruprecht will analyze melt and fluid inclusions in volcanic rocks from the McDermitt Caldera using electron microprobe, LA-ICP-MS, and SIMS to determine how lithium progressively enriched in magmas and was partitioned into volatile phases during magma...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems awarded a $175,000 Project Grant to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York to support research under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). The project aims to advance a sustainable chemistry-based approach for extracting lithium ions from hypersaline aqueous brines, which have lower lithium-ion concentrations compared to other alkali metal cations. The...
- The National Science Foundation Office of International Science and Engineering awarded $248,900 to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology on August 15, 2026, under the Office of International Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.079) for development of a thermodynamic framework modeling hydrothermal fluid-rock interaction and the mobility of critical elements including lithium, copper, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements in the Earth's crust. The project runs through July 31,...
- The University of South Florida received a $464,985 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems (CFDA 47.041 - Engineering) beginning July 1, 2025 and concluding June 30, 2028. This award funds research to discover and develop synthetic molecular receptors for selective lithium ion separation from natural sources such as salt lakes and geothermal brines. The project deliverables include the design and...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant award under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will support collaborative research to investigate the provenance of rare earth element-bearing monazite minerals in the Southeastern U.S. Atlantic Coastal Plain. The $147,775 award, made to Syracuse University, aims to explore potential bedrock and sedimentary sources of monazite and develop improved methods for locating these critical mineral deposits. The research will employ mass...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences awarded a $615,305 Project Grant entitled "GEO-CM: PROSPECTING FOR CRITICAL ELEMENT DEPOSITS: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH USING EXPERIMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY AND FIELD-INFORMED MODELING OF SEDIMENT TRANSPORT" to the University of Rochester. The grant aims to develop new tools and methods to help geoscientists locate undiscovered deposits of critical minerals, such as cobalt, niobium, and tin, that are essential for...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Directorate (CFDA 47.041) Project Grant award of $231,810 to the University of Louisville provides funding for a collaborative research project on the selective extraction of lithium from seawater. The principal investigators, Professors Xiaowei Teng and Badri Narayanan, aim to develop new classes of manganese oxide layered materials for electrochemical lithium extraction from seawater. The project will integrate materials synthesis,...
The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded Syracuse University $224,306 on September 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to study tectonic controls on lithium delivery and enrichment in the Basin and Range, with work performance in Syracuse, New York through August 31, 2029. The project reconstructs the tectonic and hydrologic evolution of Clayton Valley, Nevada—home to the only currently producing lithium brine operation in North America—to quantify how deformation controls lithium enrichment and to constrain lithium sources. Researchers will use complementary methods to reconstruct tectonic and hydrologic evolution, constrain the timing of extension, volcanism, basin sedimentation, and fault activity, and develop a process-based model linking fault evolution, basin development, and fluid flow to lithium distribution. Results will help assess how faults and basin architecture influence fluid migration and redistribution, improving the ability to predict where economically viable lithium resources may occur. The project also partners with industry to develop the Western U.S. Critical Minerals Field School, which provides students with field and laboratory training with emphasis on lithium systems.
