- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award of $296,096 to Brown University provides funding to investigate the crust and uppermost mantle beneath active volcanoes using new seismic analysis techniques. The 2-year project, starting on Sep 1, 2024, aims to advance understanding of how magma storage and migration affect the eruptibility of volcanoes in regions like Yellowstone, the Cascades Arc, and the Altiplano-Puna Volcanic Complex. Key...
- This $161,641 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports collaborative research to apply active and passive seismic imaging techniques to provide a high-resolution three-dimensional image of the subsurface summit structure of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii. Funded from February 1, 2023 to January 31, 2026, the award to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will integrate an active-passive seismic survey of the Kilauea summit with a temporary nodal...
- Cornell University was awarded a three-year, $433,198 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) beginning July 1, 2023. Under this award, Cornell will systematically map magma bodies beneath Cascades volcanoes in Washington, Oregon, and northern California through seismic imaging techniques. Working with the U.S. Geological Survey's Cascades Volcano Observatory, Cornell researchers will analyze seismic data from newly deployed instruments near volcano...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences provides $106,431 to The University of New Mexico for collaborative research under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The research aims to develop high resolution passive seismic imaging beneath Valles Caldera in Albuquerque, New Mexico from August 2021 through July 2023. The Geosciences program supports basic research to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system, including expansion of knowledge...
- This two-year, $354,309 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports research to develop a new three-dimensional subsurface framework model of the Cascadia subduction zone in the Pacific Northwest. The awardee, the University of Texas at Austin, will analyze seismic data collected during the 2021 Cascadia Seismic Imaging Experiment to study the geometry of the plate interface along the margin, variations in plate interface properties, the...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences awarded a $484,930 Project Grant to Columbia University to develop a novel multi-camera system for continuous, real-time monitoring of active volcanoes. Under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), this two-year project aims to create an integrated system that can autonomously observe volcanoes across visible, thermal, and ultraviolet wavelengths to extract critical monitoring data. The system will automatically analyze the video...
- This two-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Earth Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), provides $167,774 to the University of Houston to investigate mantle dynamics in the Pacific Northwest through 3D anisotropic seismic velocity modeling. The University will use surface wave tomography to construct a high-resolution model of seismic anisotropy in the region, revealing detailed mantle processes and testing mechanisms for geophysical...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation provides $174,000 to study the role of deformation in triggering volcanic eruptions. Funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), this award will support research from September 2021 through August 2023 to strengthen understanding of integrated Earth system processes. The Geosciences program aims to expand fundamental knowledge of atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences through basic research. This particular grant will further...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Washington $514,701 on September 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to study copper behavior in arc magmas using samples from Cascade volcanoes as a natural laboratory. The project examines how copper moves through magmatic systems during crystallization and degassing, focusing on short-lived mafic volcanoes in the Indian Heaven Volcanic Field in the central Cascade arc. Researchers...
The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology $415,488 on August 15, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct multiscale seismic imaging analysis of the Cascadia volcanic arc in the Pacific Northwest. The work examines subsurface magma system structure beneath nine of eleven high or very high threat volcanoes classified by the United States Geological Survey using passive imaging techniques including adaptive common conversion point stacking, joint inversion of receiver function and surface wave data, and PS-P tomography. The project evaluates structural, geochemical, and eruptive variability across the volcanic centers to understand how magma pathways and reservoir locations relate to regional geologic factors, crust composition, and magma flux at local and regional scales. Results will improve understanding of volcanic hazards in the Pacific Northwest region. Performance takes place in Socorro, New Mexico, with an ultimate completion date of July 31, 2029. This is a Project Grant assistance type award.
