About this award
Mississippi State University received a $198,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Forest Service Office of International Programs & Trade under the International Forestry Programs (CFDA 10.684) beginning September 15, 2025, with completion targeted for August 31, 2027. This award supports research and data collection activities focused on migratory bird conservation and habitat protection within the Gulf of America coastal region, particularly along Mississippi's coastlines. The project will generate scientific knowledge regarding long-distance and inter-continental landbird migrants that depend on critical habitats in the region during breeding and non-breeding seasons, with emphasis on understanding bird movement patterns across the Gulf during spring and fall migration periods.
The research initiative leverages Mississippi's diverse ecosystems—including grasslands, marshes, and forests—to advance understanding of the approximately 300 North American migratory bird species that utilize the Gulf of America flyway annually. Data collected through this project will inform conservation strategies for species habitat protection and may contribute to preventing the listing of at-risk species, consistent with the Forest Service mandate to conserve migratory species habitat across national forests and grasslands. The award also recognizes the economic value generated by bird-watching tourism and recreational opportunities throughout the Gulf coastal region.
Description
The region provides critical habitat and refueling resources for up to 2 billion birds each year as they travel across the gulf of america. Mississippi coasts offer grasslands, marshes, and forests that are critically important habitats for migratory birds. This region provides excellent opportunities to study a variety of migratory species that depend on critically important habitats in the breeding and non-breeding season including the collection of data that can inform our understanding of long-distance, or inter-continental, landbird migrants crossing the gulf of america during the spring and fall. The flyway also provides numerous viewing opportunities for bird enthusiasts, generating significant economic activity across several united states states.
