Address critical fire preparedness needs, community mitigation, and hazardous fuels reduction. This funding will be used to conduct prescribed burn implementation

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service awarded $496,500 to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on September 10, 2025, under the State & Private Forestry Cooperative Fire Assistance program (CFDA 10.698) to address critical fire preparedness needs and implement prescribed burn activities in Washington. The project, scheduled for completion by September 1, 2028, will focus on hazardous fuels reduction and community mitigation through prescribed fire implementation on non-federal forest and rural lands. This funding supports DNR's role as the state's primary natural resource stewardship agency managing approximately 5.6 million acres of public lands.

The prescribed burn implementation activities will advance long-term landscape resilience and wildfire prevention objectives in the Pacific Northwest region. As a key partner for the Forest Service, DNR brings substantial technical expertise in forest management, hazardous fuels reduction, and fire response from its extensive portfolio of federal cooperative agreements and grants totaling over $300 million in active and recent awards across multiple federal agencies.
