The National Science Foundation Division of Engineering Education and Centers awarded Rochester Institute of Technology $460,294 on January 15, 2027, to establish a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site focused on advanced manufacturing for biomedical applications. Under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), RIT will engage 30 undergraduates (10 per summer over three years) in 10-week, hands-on research programs spanning bioink material characterization, robot-assisted bioprinting of tissue scaffolds, surface engineering of metallic implants, and functional testing of printed bioelectronics on tissue-mimicking platforms. Students will participate in hypothesis-driven research with structured mentoring in research methods, literature review, and research ethics. Professional development includes entrepreneurial mindset training developed with the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network. Participants will present their work at RIT's annual undergraduate research symposium. Faculty mentors from engineering, materials science, and biomedical engineering will supervise research projects. Mentor training aligned with NSF best practices will strengthen future mentoring by faculty and graduate mentors, and an alumni network will support participants' continued professional development. Recruitment will be conducted nationally with broad outreach to students from diverse institution types. The program period extends from January 15, 2027, through December 31, 2029, with place of performance in Rochester, New York.
