Specifically, the research compares geochemical signatures of igneous dikes and...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded Bowling Green State University a $314,987 Project Grant under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050) to integrate spatial literacy into geoscience education and workforce development. The grant will support the development of curriculum and training to bridge the gap between geoscience education and workforce needs in the United States from January 2022 through December 2024. As the sole awardee, Bowling...
The National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education awarded Western Michigan University $295,000 on October 15, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to conduct formative qualitative research developing and validating the Nature of Geoscience Conceptions Survey. The project will investigate how geoscience students and professionals understand the principles, practices, and ways of knowing that distinguish geoscience from other scientific disciplines. Findings will inform development of the first comprehensive assessment tools designed specifically to measure understanding of the nature of geoscience, enabling educators, researchers, and institutions to evaluate whether students develop accurate conceptions of geoscience and to identify instructional strategies promoting deeper learning and engagement. The work responds to workforce projections indicating a shortfall of 135,000 geoscientists due to insufficient graduates and projected retirements, and addresses the limited or inaccurate understandings many students hold about geoscientific careers and knowledge generation. Work is performed in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with a period of performance through September 30, 2029. This Track 1 Engaged Student Learning Level II project serves the national interest by strengthening the geoscience workforce, improving STEM education, and preparing future geoscientists to address complex environmental and societal challenges.
