- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded Central Michigan University $723,992 on February 1, 2026, to acquire an advanced confocal microscope for multidisciplinary research and training. The confocal microscope is a high-resolution imaging tool enabling three-dimensional visualization of living tissues at cellular and subcellular scales. Research applications include investigation of cell membrane dynamics, intracellular protein movement and reorganization, cell...
The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Massachusetts $788,409 on July 15, 2026, under the Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) to acquire a Zeiss Lattice Lightsheet 7 microscope for shared use at Amherst, Massachusetts. The instrument will enable a research community of more than 100 users across more than 20 research groups spanning 15 departments and five institutions in and around the University of Massachusetts Amherst to observe fast three-dimensional events in soft materials and living samples. The microscope addresses a critical gap in existing imaging technologies by combining speed, resolution, imaging depth, and gentle illumination to capture processes in active matter, responsive materials, cell and tissue mechanics, reproduction, and plant development that are currently difficult or impossible to measure. The equipment will operate through an established shared light microscopy facility to support interdisciplinary research. The award funds not only the acquisition but also educational and broader-impact activities including new course modules, seminars, workshops, summer-school demonstrations, undergraduate research experiences, and K–12 outreach to make advanced STEM education available to all Americans. Performance of work extends through June 30, 2029.
