This Project Grant award of $270,000 from the National Science Foundation (CFDA 47.074 Biological Sciences) will fund a postdoctoral fellowship to study how host immunity influences the evolution of pathogen virulence. The research will use mathematical models and laboratory experiments with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans infected with the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa to investigate two key questions: 1) how individual components of the immune system shape pathogen virulence evolution, and 2) how variation in host immunity within a population affects pathogen virulence evolution. The project aims to develop a predictive understanding of how the host immune system influences pathogen virulence, with potential applications in public health policy and vaccine design. The fellowship will also provide mentorship, training, and research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. No sub-awards are planned for this project, which has a performance period from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2028.
