- This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $138,000 supports an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biology for fiscal year 2022 under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074). The fellowship funds research and training investigating the role of genomic preadaptation and physiological state in modulating bacterial invasion success. Specifically, the fellow will quantify invasion outcomes across diverse Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from different environments. The fellow will...
The National Science Foundation awarded a $414,000 Project Grant to support a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biology from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2025. The grant was awarded under the Biological Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.074), which aims to advance biological science research and understanding. The Fellowship will fund integrative research investigating the evolutionary rules governing interactions between genomes, environments and phenotypes that influence transmission dispersion of infectious diseases. The Fellow hypothesizes that pathogen evolution can increase transmission dispersion by adapting to transmit more effectively from highly infectious hosts, even if less so from other hosts. The Fellow will develop mathematical models and experimental tests using E. coli bacteria and its viral pathogen to determine if pathogen adaptation increases transmission dispersion. Additionally, the Fellow will create and teach K-12 educational modules on pathogen ecology and evolution in Philadelphia to boost student confidence and engagement in science. The research and outreach aims to improve epidemiological models for predicting disease transmission dynamics.
