This federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) supports a mixed methods study of how a community-based youth development program in Detroit, Michigan can nurture and support STEM engagement among Black and Latinx youth. The $538,026 award, which began on October 1, 2024 and runs through March 31, 2029, will examine the curricula and practices of the Downtown Boxing Gym to understand how informal learning spaces can broaden participation in STEM for underrepresented youth. The project will collect and analyze survey, interview, and video data to (1) examine how youth learn STEM in informal environments, (2) advance the knowledge base of informal STEM learning, and (3) increase belongingness, broaden participation, and support learners' understanding of STEM practices.
