This National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences (CFDA 47.074) project grant, awarded to The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, will test the hypothesis that microbial symbionts affect the evolution of defense traits in their legume plant hosts. The $1,180,492 award, with a period of performance from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2030, will investigate how the resource exchange between nitrogen-fixing Ensifer bacteria and the legume Medicago lupulina influences the evolution of leaf defensive hairs, an important plant defense mechanism against insects. The project aims to determine how genetic variation in symbiont populations impacts host defense traits, link symbiont effects to the host resources they provide and consume, and directly test the contribution of microbial symbionts to host trait evolution in the wild. The research will also provide training for undergraduate students in field biology, helping to lower the barriers for young scientists to engage in field research.
