This $549,999 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems (CFDA 47.041 - Engineering) will fund research at George Washington University to elucidate the impact of bacterial association on the infectivity, environmental persistence, and disinfection resistance of enteric viruses. The project aims to investigate the occurrence, abundance, and removal of emerging bacteria-associated viruses in wastewater treatment and natural environments, as well as explore the health impacts of these bacteria-associated viruses. The research will integrate microbiology, omics, surveillance, and immunology tools to achieve these objectives. The award also includes plans to develop new education modules on environmental pathogens and water disinfection, increase student diversity in water-related careers, and raise public understanding about environmental pathogens and their control. The project will run from August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2030.
