This National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant award under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CFDA 47.070) program provides $360,000 to New Mexico State University (NMSU) to develop a research-practice partnership to support computer science (CS) education in underserved high schools across New Mexico. The key goals are to: 1) Prepare high school teachers to teach a culturally responsive, rigorous CS curriculum that meets the needs of Hispanic/Latino and Native students in rural communities, 2) Examine how a professional development program impacts teachers' perceptions and attitudes towards CS and CS teaching, and 3) Study how to adapt the AP CS Principles course materials to support diverse students in New Mexico. The award will fund a collaborative effort between NMSU, the New Mexico Public Education Department, the CS Alliance, the CS Teachers Association of New Mexico, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation. The project aims to create a scalable, adaptable professional development program to enable more high schools across New Mexico to offer CS courses aligned to state requirements.
