This Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Integrative Activities (IA) program will provide $299,741 over 2 years to advance the understanding of high entropy alloys (HEAs) for mitigating high-velocity impact loads. The research, conducted by the University of Kentucky Research Foundation, will collaborate with Johns Hopkins University to perform high-velocity impact experiments and characterize the dynamic mechanical properties of HEAs at high strain rates. The comprehensive microstructural analysis will establish relationships between the material's properties and performance under extreme impact conditions. The project aims to improve safety, durability, and performance in critical applications such as armor plating, spacecraft shielding, and structural components exposed to high-velocity impacts. The findings will be shared with students and the broader scientific community through publications and public data availability, further advancing research and innovation in this field.
