This $300,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program grant (CFDA 47.070) awarded to Auburn University on October 1, 2024 will support a research project to explore security risks from data imprinting in SRAM (static random access memory) and develop innovative sanitization techniques. The key objectives are to conduct an in-depth analysis of security threats posed by SRAM data imprinting, characterize the effectiveness of data recovery methods, and devise cost-effective SRAM data sanitization techniques using high-energy irradiation. This work will benefit consumers, industry, and government by ensuring deleted data is not recoverable from discarded electronic systems. The project will also train two graduate students in hardware-oriented security and radiation effects on microelectronics.
